Within the past 50 years, there has been a significant temperature increase on the Earth. Our world is getting dangerously warmer. Is it because of global warming? Some people, the climate change doubters, say there is no such thing. However, if you look at all the facts, you can clearly see that the temperature is rising. Humans are the reason for global warming and the temperature increase of the world.
About Global Warming and Temperature Increase
What is global warming? Global warming is temperature increase. It isn’t just the cause of the temperature increase but it is how the Earth is getting hotter every century, every decade, and every year. The main cause of global warming is CO2, or carbon dioxide, from the transportation we use every day and from the energy we use every day. The energy we use every day is from the coal we burn to make electricity. Back in 2015, a pledge was made for us to start using clean energy. However, nothing was ever done under that pledge.
How the Earth’s Temperature is Increasing
Although Earth temperature increased slowly at first, in 2016, compared to the 1970 increase which was 0.3 degrees Fahrenheit per year, the temperature increase in 2016 was 1.69 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a major increase in temperature of the world! This temperature increase is a major global temperature rise. It is well above the average temperature of 57.0 degrees Fahrenheit. Think about this for a minute! If you really let this sink in, maybe you will finally understand the fact that global warming is a real thing happening.
Causes of Climate Change
Climate change is just another term for global warming. There is more to the cause of global warming than just CO2 pollution. It is really caused by what we call the Greenhouse Effect. The Greenhouse Effect is the reason the Earth is warm enough for life. However, because we have flooded our atmosphere with too much carbon, it has become dangerous. Carbon, or C02, stays in the lower levels of our atmosphere and absorbs heat from solar radiation.
According to Climate Central, much of the sun’s heat bouncing back from the Earth is supposed to keep going into space. However, too many greenhouse gasses has been released into the atmosphere to allow enough heat to escape. Some of the gases in our atmosphere, including, CO2, nitrous oxide, and methane actually keep the solar radiation from passing all the way through into space.
These “greenhouse” gases are also very good at spreadingthat heat, right back to our lands and water supplies on Earth.
The different transportation modes we use also cause pollution to get stuck in the lower level of the atmosphere. Although some electric cars have been made for use, not everyone is taking advantage of them.
How to Prevent More Damage
There are different things we can do to prevent global warming from getting worse. We need to do these things if we want to keep living and have a future for the children. Here is more information on the things we can do now.
- Burn cleaner energy
- Walk to work or school
- Ride a bike to work or school
- Recycle everything.
- Drive electric cars
What Will Happen in the Future
If we don’t do what we can now to prevent any further damage, worse things will happen. If we continue to let the gases into the Earth’s atmosphere, the average global temperature could rise from four degrees Fahrenheit to about 12 degrees Fahrenheit. That is a dangerous temperature increase.
However, if we make the much-needed changes now that need to be made, the temperature will only increase by one degree Fahrenheit.
Why Does All of This Matter to Us?
One reason all of this should matter is that major weather changes are occurring and will just get worse. The major heat waves we have now in the summer will just get worse. The severe weather will get worse. Because of global warming, marine life is losing their habitats and food supply.
What Is All At Stake?
Everything that makes the world go round is at stake. Here is more information about what can happen to the different things that help us survive.
The crops the farmers grow for people to eat need adequate temperature and the right amount of water to grow. If these crops don’t get the right temperature and the right amount of water, they die.
However, there are things the farmers can do now to prepare for climate change. They can choose to grow their crops at different times of the year so they will get the right amount of water and the right temperature to grow. Another option is to plant different types of crops that can survive in a hot and dry climate.
Global warming affects the energy we use and when we need to use it. This means that in some areas of the world, people might need to use more air conditioning during the summer. This uses up more electricity.
There are things that can be done if this happens. For one, if you think you will need to use more air conditioning, you could plant trees close to your area for extra shade. More trees mean more shade and cooler areas. This also means using less electricity because you won’t have to use the air conditioner as often.
With the climate changing the way it is, the water supply is getting low. Some areas are already low on water and other areas are getting low on it. Not only will the temperature increase affect the water supply but because of the increase in the average global temperature, there will be more droughts and less water running into oceans, lakes, rivers, and other water supplies.
What can be done about this now? When it comes to public water supplies for people, they can prepare for less water by using less now. Also, they can try to find another water supply to use and still use less water.
Global warming is already causing bad health for many people. Temperature increase, extreme weather, air pollution, and much more caused by climate change is causing health problems for many people. Those who are at risk for health problems the most are the elderly, the very young, the disabled, and the poor.
Some people have temperature related illnesses. When there is a temperature increase that causes heat waves; infants, the elderly, the poor, and the disabled can get sick from the heat and possibly die.
There is something that can be done to prevent heat strokes and other heat-related illnesses and death. Those who are at risk can take precautions before the summer heat waves happen. They can find alternative ways to keep cool such as using fans. There are cooling shelters set up in some cities and towns to help people keep cool from the high temperatures.
There is also air pollution caused by global warming that can cause illnesses and death. Some people suffer from asthma and severe allergies. However, they can prevent getting sick from air pollution by checking the air quality forecast on TV, online, and in newspapers. If a day is going to have high pollutants floating in the air, they can choose to not work or exercise outside.
Other problems that can happen include problems with the ecosystem, problems to plants and animals, problems to our forest, and problems with our recreation. However, if we do everything we can now to prevent any further damage from happening, we can stop global warming in its tracks and have a healthier and happier future for everyone.
